Become a Mental Health First Aider

Mental illnesses are common among youths and adults. 1 in 5 adults is faced with mental illnesses each year. Mental health first aid (MHFA) training provides you with the skill and knowledge you need to help someone experiencing mental plight and even substance-use crisis. With the mental first aid training, you will be able to recognise or identify and respond to mental health, substance use crisis and distress.

This MHFA training also enables you to provide employees in the workplace support in the way of non-judgment conversion to pointing them towards the appropriate support or help.

As an employer, the health and safety of your worker(s) is a legal duty you are obligated to fulfill. Health is more than the physical well-being of a person, it includes mental and social well-being. Most times a person with poor mental health may not realise it and even if they do, they might be hesitant to seek help or simply don’t know where or who to get help from.

There is a lot of ignorance about mental health challenges in the place of work meaning those in need of this help don’t receive it. Managers, supervisors and co-workers because of their ignorance, may unconsciously show stigmatising attitude to a person(s) experiencing mental health crisis which can be deleterious to the victim.

Additionally, organisations may attract worker’s compensation claims or unpleasant incidents due to failing to respond correctly to workers with mental health crises costing the organisation precious time and other resources.

Just as much as CPR is needed to assist a person with cardiac failure to salvage the condition, mental health first aid is imperative for anyone experiencing mental health crises and substance use disorders.
